Wag the Dog/Menear el perro
On a cold day during a frigid spell in the 2019 winter, it was being recorded as members of the New York Bully Crew approached an outdoor enclosure. Seeing people moving in his direction, the lone dog became increasingly excited as his body and bark communicated a yearning for company. In this case, the tail really did appear to be wagging the dog; an apropos metaphor for how social media can enhance dog rescue efforts.
En un día frío durante un período frígido en el invierno de 2019, se estaba grabando cuando los miembros del New York Bully Crew se acercaron a un recinto al aire libre. Al ver que la gente se movía hacia él, el perro solitario se emocionó más y más su cuerpo y su ladrido comunicaron un anhelo de compañía. En este caso, la cola realmente parecía estar moviendo al perro; una apropiada metáfora de cómo las redes sociales pueden ayudar con los esfuerzos de rescate de perros.
A collaborator, perhaps a neighbor or passerby, knowing the Bully Crew’s mission to protect dogs from abuse and neglect, contacted the New York City area rescue group, probably using social media. Learning the dog had been left to live out in back of his human’s house with no meaningful protection from the cold of winter; members of the NYBC connected with the dog’s human about the lonely canine. It turns out the man was willing to give up the dog and in fact admitted he had wanted to surrender him up for some time. The NYBC led the enthusiastic dog away from the property and presumably into a new, better life.
Un colaborador, quizás un vecino o un transeúnte, que conocía la misión de Bully Crew de proteger a los perros del abuso y la negligencia, se puso en contacto con el grupo de rescate del área de la ciudad de Nueva York, probablemente utilizando las redes sociales. Al enterarse que el perro vivia en la parte trasera de la casa de su ser humano sin ninguna protección significativa contra el frío del invierno; miembros de la NYBC se comunicaron con el humano del perro sobre el canino solitario. Resulta que el hombre estaba dispuesto a renunciar al perro y, de hecho, admitió que había querido entregarlo por algún tiempo. El NYBC se llevó al perro entusiasta de la propiedad y probablemente a una nueva y mejor vida.
Looking much further south of New York City to Buenos Aires, Facebook followers of Cintia Salazar Juarez of Refugio Zoobrevivientes message her when they spot an animal in distress. If she cannot get to the animal, Cintia posts a request for assistance from others in the area. The communication provided by social media in dog rescue can mean the difference between life and death of an animal.
Mucho más al sur de la ciudad de Nueva York, en Buenos Aires, los seguidores de Facebook de Cintia Salazar Juárez del Refugio Zoobrevivientes le envían un mensaje cuando ven a un animal en peligro. Si no puede llegar al animal, Cintia publica una solicitud de asistencia a otros en el área. La comunicación proporcionada por las redes sociales en rescate de perros puede significar la diferencia entre la vida y la muerte de un animal.
Some of the highest drama occurs when Cintia is contacted about an injured dog, but no one from the organization is able to get to the animal. Inevitably someone will complain that no one has arrived yet to help a dog that has been suffering for hours or maybe longer. Her response: “What is wrong with you? Why haven’t YOU done anything to help the suffering dog?”
Los momentos más intensos ocurren cuando alguien contacta a Cintia sobre un perro herido, pero nadie de la organización puede llegar al animal. Inevitablemente, alguien se quejará de que nadie ha llegado para ayudar a un perro que ha estado sufriendo durante horas o quizás más. La respuesta de Cintia: "¿Qué te pasa a ti? ¿Por qué tú no has hecho nada para ayudar al perro que sufre? "
The images you see on social media platforms from the New York Bully Crew and Refugio Zoobrevivientes are real. They connect the viewer with the mission, the action, the highs and the lows and sometimes force people to ask themselves why they remain on the sidelines when faced with the suffering of an innocent animal. Take a look for yourself at what these organizations do. Perhaps you can do something to help wag the dog. (See links below)
Las imágenes compartidas en las plataformas de redes sociales de Bully Crew y Refugio Zoobrevivientes de Nueva York son reales. Conectan al visitante con la misión, el desempeño, los altibajos y, a veces, obligan a las personas a preguntarse por qué permanecen al margen cuando se enfrentan al sufrimiento de un animal inocente. Echa un vistazo por ti mismo a lo que hacen estas organizaciones. Quizás puedas hacer algo para ayudar a menear al perro. (Ver enlaces abajo)
**Just in case you have not heard of him, I would like to introduce a champion of abused dogs who graces the screen of my cell phone often; he goes by the name C. Legit. Mr. Legit and his New York Bully Crew rescue dogs in New York City. Some of the dogs they rescue are in dire states and need to undergo extensive and expensive treatment to nurse them back to health before being adopted. Mr. Legit requests donations for individual cases that end up with large veterinary bills and all in all appears to do work similar to that of Cintia Salazar Juarez. The NYBC also receives dogs that have been rescued in Puerto Rico and take dogs from death row situations. Having followed their good deeds on Instagram for several years now, it seems the NYBC does indeed “fight for those who can’t fight for themselves.”
** En caso de que no hayas oído hablar de él, me gustaría presentarte a un campeón de perros maltratados que aparece en la pantalla de mi celular con frecuencia; Él va por el nombre C. Legit. El Sr. Legit y su New York Bully Crew rescatan a los perros abandonados en la ciudad de Nueva York. Algunos de los perros que rescatan se encuentran en condiciones extremas y deben someterse a un tratamiento extenso y costoso para curarlos antes de ser adoptados. El Sr. Legit solicita donaciones para casos individuales que terminan con grandes facturas veterinarias y, en general, parece hacer un trabajo similar al de Cintia Salazar Juárez. La NYBC también recibe perros que han sido rescatados en Puerto Rico y perros de situaciones en el corredor de la muerte. Después de haber seguido sus buenas acciones en Instagram durante varios años, puedo decir que si, la NYBC "lucha por aquellos que no pueden luchar por sí mismos.”
In honor of the work of Mr. Legit and his crew I created an abstract painting and tagged the New York Bully Crew when I posted it on Instagram. Since first posting my work, I revisited the same canvas and made some improvements. I haven’t decided if the painting is done yet but I’m guessing the work of the New York Bully Crew will not be complete until animal cruelty and abandonment ends.
En honor del trabajo del Sr. Legit y su equipo, hice una pintura abstracta y etiqueté al New York Bully Crew cuando lo publiqué en Instagram. Desde que la publiqué, volví a visitar el mismo lienzo e hice algunos cambios. Todavía no he decidido si la pintura está terminada, pero supongo que el trabajo del Bully Crew de Nueva York no estará completo hasta que termine la crueldad y el abandono de los animales.
